"Chasing a Shadow from Richmond"
A continuation of the research originally presented in
“Has he been Hiding in Plain Sight” (2010) and “Out of Hiding”(2011)
The“Dashing young Confederate volunteer in 61” who appeared in this 1911 advertisement for Francis Trevelyan Miller’s The Photographic History of the Civil War is known to us today as an antebellum Virginia Volunteer from 1859. For 150 years, as the “man in the middle,” he has been at the center of the most iconic image of its time. From its initial appearance in 1911, our attention has been indelibly drawn to the men seen in this remarkable image, RG#1. Come and follow RG#1, “the Shadow from Richmond,” on its journey to become the Face of the American Civil War.
